Individual Therapy for Adults

Getting in and getting comfortable…

A couch, comfy chairs, books that exude intelligence, pictures, and oversized degrees are the creature comforts in most therapy offices.

The more comforting the room is, the more comfortable you feel talking to a stranger.

Will you be required to jump right in and talk about every ugly detail of your life? Not at all, how scary is that?!?!

Let’s face it, therapy is usually a last resort. You’ve either tried everything and it hasn’t worked, or you’re tired of feeling…bad, isolated, and/or anxious.

Maybe you’re waking up with a tightness in your chest every day.

Or worse, a full-blown panic attack that feels like a heart attack – multiple days, weeks, or years with no end in sight puts you at the end of your rope.

Dread or feeling “blah” without knowing why you feel that way some days is frustrating. Especially when in your bones, you know you should be happy more days than not.

Why are you feeling like this?

How does it go away?

“Will I ever get better?”

Even as a last resort, therapy can be a good teacher and healing experience.

You can explore the why things are happening. That may bring you to the root of the problem, and you learn more about how you heal a deep wound. Or you have no desire to know why, which is okay, too. Focusing on solutions you can use right now and after therapy is over is great. A combo of the two works, too.

Whichever shoe fits, there are paths to deal with what’s hurting you and stopping you from living your life to the fullest.

So, where do we start?

Here’s how we’ll work together…

The first few sessions, you are getting to know me and vice-versa. After the first couple sessions, the real work begins. Roll up your sleeves, and let’s jump into your head and emotions!

You are in charge of what we talk about and when. I won’t tell you how you feel, or should feel, about anything. Your feelings are valid and why you feel them is as well. I don’t have all the answers. No one does, but I will try.

We won’t just talk, so be prepared!

The mind-body connection is real, and we will not ignore the physical effects of trauma.

I promise you won’t have to come in ready to do a full circuit or twist yourself into a pretzel while balancing a ball on your nose. Trauma ingrains itself into your body and manifests in aches, pains, headaches, and more serious diseases like diabetes and heart disease.

In the spirit of treating the whole you, we will not just talk about your mental health. We’ll talk about your diet and exercise. Why? What you eat and your physical activity can enhance or tank your mental health. No shaming, no boot camps, no lecturing. Just more education, so you know how to take care of yourself beyond the therapy room.

And we’re setting goals for you.

We work together to track your progress and make changes as needed.

Goal setting kind of looks like the outlines we learned to use in school. We’ll define your overall goal; i.e., I want to feel less depressed, and we will dive deeper into how we get there over time. Whether that’s getting out of the house more, starting Jiu Jitsu, or rediscovering talents.

We will look at every area of your life to use what’s working, or could work, to build a tool box of techniques and skills. Don’t feel like you have anything you can use?

Don’t worry – I’ll find it and help you see you can be your own best friend and advocate.

We are in this together, and we’ll keep working until we find the right road to get you where you want to be.
