How do I schedule an appointment?

We’ll schedule a phone consultation first. If you’d like to proceed, we’ll schedule an appointment during the first opening that works for our schedules.

What is a free initial phone consultation?

A free initial phone consultation gives you the unique opportunity to ask about the therapy process, what I do, and, most importantly, give some background on you, your challenges, and your goals.

It can cut down on some of the awkwardness of sitting down with a total stranger and watch them watching you, asking a series of personal, slightly differentiated questions.

You also get to decide if you’re comfortable sharing hurt, pain, shame, guilt, happiness, joy, laughter… with me.

When you decide to schedule a first appointment, we can recap our conversation and then jump into the work of therapy.

How do I make an appointment?

If you decide we’re a fit, you can schedule an appointment right then! If you want to think about it first, call me, (317) 395-3716, or email me aconsciouschangecounseling@gmail.com, and we will schedule an appointment.

At the end of every session, we’ll schedule at least one future appointment, so you don’t skip a beat.

What happens during the first appointment?

We talk. We don’t know each other, and it takes a session or two for you to get comfortable with talking to and trusting a stranger with every awful thing that’s happened in your life.

We’ll establish some short- and long-term goals after we discuss in more detail what’s happening and how it’s affecting your life. We move on from there – slowly… and at your pace.

How long does therapy take?

That’s a good question that has no cookie-cutter answer. When you’ve reached your goals, therapy is over. It’s up to you to put in the work and make the most of your session.

Will there be times when we address something not related to our initial goals? Yes. Life happens and we will switch gears as needed to make sure you’re okay and functioning the way you want.

How long is a typical session?

Sessions can be anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes. Now, that does not mean if you’re in crisis you’re pushed out the door when the timer sounds. I’m here to help you, and that means there will be times when we go into OT in session.

Housekeeping/courtesy request – There may be someone scheduled right after you. If you’re not in crisis, please be mindful of the next person and their needs.

Will therapy actually help me?

Absolutely, if you’re ready to put in the work!

Therapy is not to “fix” you. Therapy will be a way for you to learn about yourself and your capabilities.

Therapy opens the door to a new way of thinking and creates new possibilities for your life.

Can I bring my significant other, spouse, or family member with me?

Yes, BUT:

  1. Outside of your first appointment, please give me a heads up, so we can prepare for the session together.
  2. Expect me to set them straight or make them understand or tell them to… I’m a therapist not a referee! Education and support is what we will both provide for your support system.
  3. I am YOUR therapist. I cannot and will not diagnose anyone I have not seen. It’s unethical and unfair to that person who hasn’t had a chance to tell their truth. We all see things from different vantage points :).
  4.  Not to every session! This journey is about you and for you.

Parents, come here, let me tell you something… your children won’t talk in front of you. They will let you talk for them, they’ll answer the way they think you want them to, or they’ll be angry the whole time.

I promise if they’re in danger or there’s a major issue, I will let you know. When they are in my care, they are precious cargo. I treat them like I would my own children (if I had them; I have a godson, if that brings me points).

Can I cancel an appointment? Do you have a cancellation policy?

Of course, you can cancel an appointment! There are things that happen outside your control like illness, car issues, etc. If there is an emergency, we’ll talk about it and get your appointment rescheduled.

Outside of emergencies, 24 hours’ notice please. If there isn’t an emergency and you don’t cancel in 24 hours, you’ll be charged the price of the session.

Why? If you’re not here, someone else can be seen, someone else who needs help just like you or your child. And, this is a business (you were thinking it, so I said it out loud).

Are there other things I should know about your office?

The entire floor is shared by several different businesses – it’s a bit of a maze, but it’s quiet. Your confidentiality will not be compromised at all.

Oh, my goodness, the lobby is nice! And the receptionists are very nice, very professional, and extremely helpful.

How in the world is yoga helpful to me in therapy?

I’m stepping into my therapy and fitness geek mode in 3, 2, 1…

One of the issues with trauma is that it traps your mind and body in the past. There’s a piece of you that believes the trauma is still happening and is attempting to protect you from it when triggered.

Yoga is a way to bring awareness to the present and to you. That awareness is helpful in soothing yourself when experiencing symptoms and pulling you slowly into the present.

We will move at your pace; no weird, twisty, touch-your-toe-to-your-nose poses (unless you can do that, which is pretty cool). So, if you’re not flexible, that’s fine!

And if it’s something that doesn’t work for you or you’re not comfortable with it, we don’t do it, period.

Are you one of those Jesus people?

Am I a Christian? Yes. What I’m not is a stereotypical Super Saint who looks down on other people as if I’ve ascended with Jesus and am blessing you with my presence.

We can invite, or not invite, God and his word into your sessions. These are your sessions… not a covert operation to tell you how much you need Jesus in your life and throw you into anybody’s sanctuary so you can be healed.

You look young… how old are you anyway?

A lady never tells! If you’re good at math you can kinda sorta guess an age range.

I promise I’m an adult, for real. I’ve lived life and draw on my own, and others’ close to me, experiences to help my clients.

And, no, I will not show you my driver’s license!
